Madison Square Garden Coffee Table

Large amounts of material provide for larger projects, even furniture.  We captured Knicks Championship glory by transforming their 1970 & 1973 Championship floor into this unique coffee table.  We fabricated a sturdy industrial steel base to cradle the 30" x 54" section of the floor that features interesting sideline markings.  The floor was quite worn, so up top is 3/8" glass to protect & preserve this witness to the historic achievement.  We're happy to report this prototype found a home in the offices of executive Garden leadership, and hopefully sparked conversation for colleagues and guests.

Project Details

Given the amount of wear & tear the Garden floor had gone through, the challenge was to make a simple design that would be functional in a home or office but safely feature the patinated surface.  We designed the base so that the floor could be lifted out for easy transfer or moving.

The coffee table measures approximately 30" wide and 54" long with a height of 22"

Authenticity

In 2008, Tokens & Icons was contacted by Madison Square Garden about the retired floor from their 1970 and 1973 NBA Championship teams. The floor panels had been stored in Brooklyn in a non-temperature-controlled warehouse and then moved to New Jersey for many years. Due to hot humid summers and cold dry winters, the finish on the panels was in rough shape. Tokens & Icons visited this warehouse to hand-select the choicest panels for use in cuff links, pendants, pens, bottle openers and even a coffee table.

More About Past Prototypes

Tokens is based on the creative re-use of existing, authentic materials.  Often times we get an inspiration or receive some materials from a client that triggers a design concept.  In many cases, we find real materials deserve real samples.  While these are not for sale, they are shown here as a representation of our capabilities.  If your organization has some materials that you'd like to memorialize in this fashion, we'd love to collaborate on a custom program with you.
