New York Times Crossword Puzzle Collection

As a vendor for the New York Times Store for many years, we wanted to do something exclusive for our valued partner.  We approached them with the idea of having Will Shortz create a mini puzzle that we could then make accessories from.  To push the authenticity envelope, we even had the puzzle printed on New York Times newsprint.  Set in sterling silver under non-glare, UV protected glass.  Hallmarked NY Times on back.

Artifact: A Crossword Puzzle printed on New York Times newsprint.

Project Concept: Sterling silver Cuff Links & Necklaces that feature a workable NY Times crossword puzzle.

Date of Project: Prototyped in September 2011

Project Details

Many clients we work with may not appear to have a source of obvious, tangible artifacts/materials to be reworked into functional items.   Much of the tech and media that we are surrounded by are based on digital content & information.  The New York Times was one such challenge.  However, when we considered what is iconic about the New York Times, we landed on the Crossword Puzzle, which they have published in the paper since 1942.

More About Past Prototypes

Tokens is based on the creative re-use of existing, authentic materials.  Often times we get an inspiration or receive some materials from a client that triggers a design concept.  In many cases, we find real materials deserve real samples.  While these are not for sale, they are shown here as a representation of our capabilities.  If your organization has some materials that you'd like to memorialize in this fashion, we'd love to collaborate on a custom program with you.
