The Toronto Maple Leafs are one of the Original Six, the 6 teams that formed the foundation for the NHL. Now a multifunctional building, Maple Leaf Gardens was origianlly built for ice hockey and is considered one of the sport's "cathedrals." It was home to the Maple Leafs since its opening in 1913 until 1999. During those years, the Maple Leafs won 11 Stanley Cups and the Gardens hosted the first ever NHL All-Star Game in 1947. In 2007, two years before its renovation, Maple Leaf Gardens was named a National Historic Site of Canada and recognized as a location significant to hockey, sport, and historical and popular culture events. Left is a photo of a Maple Leafs home game against the Blackhawks in the early 1960s.
