The 10 Agorot was first minted by the Bank of Israel when the country changed its currency system. The seven-branched candelabrum design is a replica of a coin first issued by Mattathias Antigonus in 37-40 BC. He was the last king of the Hasmonean dynasty of Judea. The Bank of Israel eventually adopted this image as their logo, and, since they discontinued the 1 and 5 agorot coins in 1991 and in 2008, the 10 agorot is currently the smallest denomination.
